Guatemalan Mercado

On February 22nd, 2026, Guest Kitchen set its first Long Table of the year in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, opening a door to the colors, flavors and warmth of Guatemala. Inspired by the energy of a traditional Guatemalan mercado, the evening was hosted by Cyra, who shared the culture of her homeland through food, personal stories, games and traditions.

What made this table especially authentic was that some of its most distinctive ingredients had travelled all the way from the markets of Guatemala to Berlin. Spices, traditional products and Mayan cacao were brought directly from Guatemala, bringing the aromas and flavors of its local mercados to the table. From the welcome drinks to the final course, these ingredients became part of the story of the evening.

The journey began with a welcome cocktail made with Quetzalteca, a Guatemalan liqueur, alongside free-flowing Jamaica and Tamarindo. Mercado-style starters followed: elotes locos, tostadas with salsa roja, frijoles and guacamole, and oranges with pepitoria. For the main course, guests enjoyed Jocón, a traditional Guatemalan stew with vegetables and chicken, served with rice and a mini tamal. Dessert brought a Guest Kitchen twist, with Giza creating a fusion dessert using Guatemalan ingredients, alongside the special Mayan cacao brought directly from Guatemala. Wine pairings accompanied the main course and dessert.

But Guatemalan Mercado was about much more than what was served. Around one long table, guests from nine different countries; the UK, Germany, Türkiye, Guatemala, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Serbia and the US came together over ancient Mayan flavors, shared stories, games, laughter and new connections.

With Cyra bringing the warmth and stories of Guatemala to the table, the evening captured the spirit of Guest Kitchen: discovering a culture not only through its food, but through the ingredients, traditions and stories behind it.
